Important Cities of Bulgaria

Bulgaria holds many important cities that are seen as beacons of history throughout Europe. Yes Bulgaria may not be a fighting force economically yet as its major cities are not known like Berlin, London and Paris, but Bulgarias cities carry a history that these European capitals can only wish to have.

Important Bulgarian Cities

Vidin

Vidin is a city that sits on the north western borders of Bulgaria, along the giant river Danube. Vidin is the most important city in the province with the same name and has the largest population in the province of just under 68,500 inhabitants.

Historically Vidin is an interesting city having been a Celtic settlement in the ages of the ancients thousands of years before Christ. Post Celtic times the city belonged to the infamous Alexander the Great and his father Philip of Macedon.

The city also spent time under Roman rule where it became a town fortified over two thousand years ago.

Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and has a population of some three hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants. Plovdiv is probably the oldest city in Europe and is known to be older than Athens, Constantinople and Rome.

Many thousands of years ago, probably around six thousands years before Christ the Thracian people settled in Plovdiv around the Maritsa River. Like all Thracian settlements the Thracian people of Plovdiv fell under the rule of Philip of Macedon and then his son Alexander the Great.

Post the birth of Christ the city became an important part of the Roman Empire, which can be seen by the wonderfully preserved Roman theatre that is in the heart of the city today.

Plovdiv has even seen the feared Attila the Hun come and visit its city causing havoc as he went in the fifth century.

Today Plovdiv is an important administrative centre for the province that shares the same name; it is also a bustling city full of different industries from food to electrical.
