In this article I will talk about the pros and cons of living with roommates, how to find roommates, and Ill share some of my experiences along the way. This will be a two part post due to its length. Part I will discuss dorm life, while Part II will discuss life after the dorms.

Since I just graduated from college in April of 2005, I consider myself somewhat of an expert in the college living life. Not much has changed in the few months I have been on my own. I am living by myself for the first time in my life, and let me tell you, it is quite different than being in college.

Most students start off their college experience living in the dorms. When I moved in, I elected to live in an old fashion dorm. Twenty some odd rooms on the floor with one large communal bathroom. The guys section was separated from the girls section by a lounge/kitchen with one stove, one oven, a few couches, and a TV. Not quite the same as living at home with your own bedroom and bathroom. Most dorms (at least the old fashion ones) do not have single rooms. Everyone has a roommate, and sometimes there are triples in one room. Most schools give you the option to choose your roommate or have one randomly assigned to you. My freshman year, I chose to live with a friend. Make sure you are good friends with this person or else you may end of wanting to kill each other. I have so many friends that wound up hating their roommates. They were friends on the outside, but in the room it was hell.

I was lucky for the first semester of college. I got along with my roommate for the most part. We led different lives, which was a good thing. I was on the meal plan and he wasnt. We took different classes at different times and hung out with different people too. In my opinion this is how it has to be if you choose to live with a friend. You cant be too close or else your friendship will crumble. (Please note that the dorms I am talking about are the ones that are about 12x12 with two twin beds and two desks and enough room to stand up. The new age dorms where people have their own rooms and bathrooms are totally different.) My friend who I roomed with ended up transferring to a new school after our first semester for various reasons. I thought I had it made in the shade. Would the school not know? Would I get the room to myself? The answer was no.

Enter Kraut (my new roommate from Germany). He was American, but grew up in Germany on a military base. This was one of the best and worst experiences of college. Living with a complete stranger who is the complete opposite of you. This is every incoming freshmans worst nightmare. Andrew (who I referred to as Kraut... please dont take offense to this. It was just a friendly joke between us) moved in with me because he was voted out of a triple dorm room by his previous roommates. Wow. After living with him for a semester, I know why they voted him out.

First off, he was in the ROTC. I have nothing against being a proud American and wanting to serve in the military, but when you have to wake up at 4:00 AM every morning to go run with that squadron, thats when I start to lose it. His alarm would go off at 3:45 AM everyday and he would snooze for about 30 minutes. He never went to class, so he was there to bug me on all my time off. He played Counter-Strike (which Im sure all you guys know what it is. Counter-Strike is a terrorist/counter terrorist video game). He played it all through the night with the sound up. You would think me dorm room was a war zone. I tried to take him out with me, or eat lunch with him at the cafeteria, but I just couldnt take it. I learned a lot from Kraut and will never forget him. My most memorable moment is when I turned the volume all the way up on my PC and blasted the Salute Your Shorts theme song right in his ear while he was sleeping. I captured it all on video. He flicked me off and went to bed. I havent seen Kraut since I moved out of the dorm.

Some Pros and Cons of living in the dorms (once again, I am talking about the old fashioned dorms, not the apartment style ones).

Pro Right on campus. You can wake up 5 minutes before class and walk there in your boxer shorts.
Pro Right on campus. Food is close by (especially if you are on a meal plan).
Pro Social life. You meet a lot of new people living in the dorms. Some become friends for life. Dorms often have mini-parties and social events where everyone hangs out.
Pro Its new. College is about experiencing new things. Dorm life is one of them.
Pro Its cheap. Not nearly as expensive as renting an apartment.
Pro Its very easy to find pick up games for sports.
Pro There is an Ethernet computer network. High speed internet access and everyone is connected. Awesome for playing video games. (When I was a freshman things like Napster were brand new. People were downloading music left and right on the high speed network and sharing music like youve never seen. And as far as we knew, it was all legal).

Con No privacy. People will just randomly walk in your room. Keep it locked.
Con Old and dirty dorms are no fun. I got sick once a month living in there. I still have breathing problems.
Con Dorms are very small. You wont be able to fit everything you have in your closet.
Con Having annoying roommates that you can do nothing about.
Con - Internet firewalls. Some dorms are real strict now about what you can and can not do on the schools internet. Sorry guys, no downloading music here.
Con Cooking food can be quite a problem. You have no fridge or oven in your room.
Con Bugs and rats. Depending on how old your dorm is (mine was built in the 40s I think) you might find rodents running around. We had a rat problem one week. I saw one run right across the floor in my room and then he disappeared into the wall.

If you are getting into fly fishing, it is easy to lose yourself in the great debate on rods and flies. Not so fast. The reel is just as important, so here is a primer.

The fly fishing reel is a work of art. In fact, the first one was patented in 1874 by the epic master of fly fishing Charles Orvis. His family has been making fly fishing equipment in one form or another since them. As technology has improved dramatically, reels have also become more sophisticated. That being said, they still are comprised of some fairly basic components.

There is a major difference between fly reels and bait reels. Fly reels require more of a touch on your part. Casting is undertaken by laying the line out while controlling the line with your non-casting hand. It can take a while to get the hang of it, but the important thing to understand is the reel is not really a device that just lets you swing away like you would with a non-fly rod.

The original fly reels were really simple. They served only one real purpose to bring the line in. They offered no drag, which meant you could do some serious damage to your hands if you snagged a larger fish. A drag mechanism is used to slow or stop the line from feeding out when a fish takes the bait or, in this case, the fly.

As fly fishing has become more popular, people have started looking for bigger game. This created a problem since most fly reels were not really tailored to taking in a beast. If a large fish struck the fly, the line would real out without any way to stop it other than to hold the line or wear gloves. The new reels now incorporate breaking mechanisms that solve this problem. The mechanism create friction on the line to either slow down the line feed or stop it completely. These reels have to be used with specified rods. If you try to bolt one onto a traditional rod, they tend to snap since they are not really designed to carry such loads. At least mine have!

So, what type of reel should you use. It depends. Many feel the new reels with breaking mechanisms are a break from tradition. The answer really lies with you. Give both a try and make your own choice.

This simple statement opens up a whole drawer of possibilities of refining your communications practice to attract more of what you want.

Define problem?

What many do not realize is that it is not the product or service that the client desires, but rather the feeling, emotion and sensation that ensues when their problem is solved or improved. This should be the result of using the product or experiencing the service. A clients problem is not finding a massage therapist. The clients problem is that they are not feeling the way they would like to. And you might have the solution to that problem.

Here are some examples so you get the gist:
Starbucks does not sell coffee, they sell a community meeting place.
Mercedes does not sell cars, they offer status symbols.
Gatorade quenches thirst.

What is your solution?

Anticipating client problems, associating them with a demographic profile and offering a solution is essential to being able to address them successfully and critical to attracting that client group.

Every demographic has there own common set of problems. Yes, everyone is different, but based on commonalities such as age, profession, location and other keys we find that certain groups have similar needs. We often can define groups based on age, income, mobility, education, employment status, and even location.

Some examples of the more obvious groups are:
Seniors
Business people
Traveling business people
Pregnant women
Athletes

Some examples of the less obvious are:
People with fibromyalgia
Children with Down syndrome
Runners
Bikers
Shoppers
Young parents
Bereaved parents
Business leaders
Chemically sensitive
Hospice care
Cancer survivors

What does this mean for your practice?

When you define your product or service, think about what you really provide. You may not always be able to directly call it by its name, but you should try to get as close to describing it as possible.

And then think about whom you can really relate too. Often this is based on your own life experiences during which you developed a deep understanding of a situation and are relaxed about it. Its important that you can relate without judgment to others experiencing the same situation and dealing with these people will not pose a difficult situation for you. The area where you can develop a deep rapport, is where you will likely be most successful.

The more accurately you can define your solution to an existing problem, the easier it is to communicate with your target market. Does that make sense? If you know that you are catering to senior citizens, it is easier to find out where the congregate, which publications they read and what other forms of communication they tend to prefer. It is also much easier to formulate the solution(s) you offer.

The question is always: How can I improve the clients experience in their current state by guiding them to a future state in which they have a better experience of themselves.

The next question is: How can I convey this information to them?

While there are many details that can be refined in this process it is important to return to the original thought of: What problem am I solving here. I find that there are primary issues and secondary issues and sometimes even a third or fourth layer that offer opportunities to provide a unique service.

Let me provide an example. Most likely the primary reason your client is showing up (for the first time) is that they have a PAIN in their... Probably one of the main reasons is that they have not spent the time to RELAX and by booking a massage they are giving themselves permission to do so. Maybe underneath all that is that they find themselves in a situation that will not allow them to take TIME AWAY from the circumstances and by visiting you they are doing so.

While the primary issue is often addressed by many: example: relieve your pain with massage therapy, secondary and tertiary layers often go unmentioned.

For example: Get immediate relief from your migraine headache, relax deeply and give yourself the time out you deserve.

Now, if your communication says (and this is a real example):

[Name Removed] Massage Therapy is one of the more experienced massage practices in Los Angeles (located in North End, LA). I draw from 23 years of experience in healing work and massage therapy and a strong, intuitive, compassionate, and uniquely healing touch. I am versed in Swedish, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, On-site Chair Massage, and Energy Healing.

This statement not only requires the client to figure out on their own what the benefits are, but also leaves everything open to interpretation.

Would it not be better to say the following?: If you are looking for someone who will really listen to you and knows how sensitive you are, can alleviate the little aches and pains with comforting touch and send you off feeling like a new person, your should call ... for a free consultation.

Some women will experience one or two of them, others will have several of the very early signs of pregnancy.
