Home Made Hand Tools For Hobby Foundry Work

If you have been thinking about making a start in hobby foundry work in your home workshop, you may be forgiven for thinking that the tools and equipment are going to cost you an arm and a leg, this need not be. Sure, you could trot off to the downtown industrial tools supplier and take home an arm full of expensive tools.

But if you take a good look at some of the tools, you'll discover that the design principles and fabrication could well be undertaken in the home workshop if you have metal fabrication skills and a reasonable amount of basic metal working equipment.

Take for instance "crucible lifting tongs", once you understand how these tools operate; you could quite easily make a set or two over a weekend. The basic design action operates on the "scissor principle" but they don't cut anything, they are designed to "clamp securely" onto the crucible to lift it out of the furnace when the metal has melted. Great caution needs to be taken while carrying out this operation, as one slip due to faulty or badly designed tongs, and you could have a disaster on your hands.

The best way to design and build a set of tongs is to copy a well made set, or to follow directions set out in a textbook or ebook downloaded from the net, we'll give you some links a little further on in this article.

Some of the most frequently used basic tools you'll need in the hobby foundry are; Bench ramming moulders tool - Tube sprue cutter - turned wood sprues - slick & oval spoon - hand riddle or sand sieve - draw pins, screws & hooks - rapping bar and spike - gate cutter - strike off bar - sand carving tools (made from old hacksaw blades). The tools mentioned above seem to be the ones that will be most used in your hobby foundry... and all of them can be home made if you have metal & wood working skills, it will take time and effort to make the tools required but they wont cost you a red cent if you make them from scrap materials, and if you are like most hobbyists you will know where to "scrounge stuff".

You may have to experiment with different ideas before you arrive at the most satisfactory design, but you will learn a great deal about why things have to be made in certain ways.

Do you own a wood lathe? Even a most basic machine will suffice in the home workshop, you could even make your own if you were keen enough,I guarrantee there are tens of thousands of home made wood lathes sitting in hobby workshops the world over. A wood lathe will repay itself many times over when you start to make patterns for your hobby foundry.

Your bench-ramming tool can be quickly turned to shape on your wood lathe, in fact, while you're at it, make two or three of them in different shapes & sizes, they will all come in handy when ramming and moulding patterns of differing sizes, you could get away with a single tool, but you wont regret making extra tools.

After a pattern has been completely rammed in a sand mould, and before the metal is poured, the pattern has to be removed without disturbing any of the surrounding sand. Draw pins and spikes are used to remove timber patterns from sand moulds.

Simple draw pins can easily be fabricated from long slender wood screws, particleboard screws are ideal. The easiest way to convert woodscrews into draw pins is to braze-weld a short length of 1/4" dia mild steel rod onto the head of the screw...that is all you need to do... make a set of them with different gauge screws as well long and short ones and you should have the field covered as far as lifting pins or draw spikes go... simple isn't it.

Blunt hacksaw blades are usually thrown in the bin, from now on you should save them, as many useful little hobby foundry tools can be made from old saw blades, quite often small sand carving tools can be quickly made by grinding and shaping using a normal bench grinder.

By being resourceful and thinking how you can use scrap materials, you should see now that there is absolutely no need to spend large amounts of money to get the tools and things you need for your hobby. If you are not sure about your own building & fabricating abilities then you should always ask advice.

Metal craft has been a lifelong interest, ever since my grandfather introduced me to the blacksmiths forge at a young age on the family farm where I grew up. Several decades later, I become addicted to melting and pouring molten metal into sand moulds. Then began the move into publishing ebooks for the hobby foundry worker. We now have a very large number of global customers. Muhammad

FAITH THAT MOVES MOUNTAINS:

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior is a great book that would allow people to see how they can cause change. It is written by Dan Millman who brings us the following from another of his books that are all worth contemplation.

"On an otherwise ordinary day, an angel appeared to a young merchant and former camel herder, known by all in the city where he was born. The angel's words filled him with awe and dread--it told him that he was to defy his people's ancestral religion, to denounce 360 deities carved in stone and worshipped for centuries, to declare himself the prophet of a single God, to abolish a way of life upon which countless lives and beliefs were founded--and establish a new religion out of nothing. Surely, he would be met with incredulity, rejection, violent persecution, and exile. Could his seemingly mad quest bring anything but failure--or at best, a martyr's death?

Or would this mortal, obedient to the divine command of an angel, achieve a victory beyond any that reason could have foretold?

He was born in Mecca in A.D. 570. His father died before his birth. His devastated mother, unable to nurse him, named Muhammad and gave him to a nursemaid--a shepherdess in a band of Bedouins. Muhammad spent his first five years with these nomads, living a hardy open-air existence following the grazing flocks through desert grass and scrub, sleeping in tents beneath a vast desert sky. Once weaned, he drank camel's milk and ate mostly rice, dates, wild birds, and locusts fried in oil. From the beginning, the desert claimed Muhammad as its own. He would always be a Bedouin at heart.

At age six, he returned to his mother, but she died later that year. He ended up living with an uncle, a caravan merchant. In the years that followed, Muhammad traveled throughout Arabia with his uncle's caravans, learning the wisdom of the desert, the ways of business, and the art of war as they fought off bands of marauders. His travels took him into close contact with various tribes and religions--Judaism, Christianity, and the Arab sects who worshipped hundreds of gods and goddesses in the form of stone idols. These experiences made a deep impression on this thoughtful, introspective youth. From these early threads, the tapestry of his fate was woven.

He grew into a handsome young man admired for his strong character, moral integrity, and sharp mind. But he had come to a merchant's life more by chance than choice. Disinterested in money and drawn to solitude, he left the caravan to work as a shepherd in the desert for months at a time.

When he was 25, Muhammad took a position in a trading company owned by a beautiful woman 15 years his senior. Her name was Khadija. For two years, he led Khadija's caravans throughout Arabia, rising to the position of company manager. Not surprisingly, Khadija fell in love with him. Finally, she proposed to him through an intermediary. Their marriage, which blessed them with six daughters, would last until Khadija's death 21 years later.

But almost as soon as the wedding ceremony had ended, Muhammad's mind again turned inward. His encounters with so many cultures and religions had planted hidden seeds within him that began to grow. He found himself pondering how the 360 stone gods in the temple of Mecca could save souls. Such questions drew him to once again search his own soul in the solitude of the desert.

Muhammad began spending his days in a cave in the hills outside Mecca, fasting, praying, and meditating. Sleeping little, he began to enter altered states {Seems a man away from a woman having visions who is a shepherd and poor person, might have begun to prove appealing in the literary tradition.} and have waking visions--to experience the inner life of a mystic. At times, violent trembling seized him and he lost consciousness. A practical man of robust health who had endured many grueling journeys across the desert, he found these phenomena strange and disturbing. But these inner quakes {Buddha's story includes lots of this kind of thing. What would happen to them today?} that he feared might be the harbingers of failing health were actually the premonitory tremors of a great awakening.

One night in the holy month of Ramadan in his 40th year, while fasting and praying in his desert cave, Muhammad heard a voice calling him with great urgency. Looking up in the darkness of his cave, he saw an angel standing before him, emanating a dazzling light. Muhammad fainted with fear, when he awoke, he found the angel still standing there.

'Read, thou,' the angel commanded him in a voice of stern authority.

'I cannot,' Muhammad stammered, for he could barely read.

'Read, thou,' the angel commanded him again in verse, 'in the name of the Lord who created all things, who created man from a clot. Read in the name of the Most High who taught man the use of the pen and taught him what before he knew not.'

In awe, Muhammad repeated these words, memorizing each one. Then the angel said, 'Muhammad, thou art the messenger of Allah and I am his angel, Gabriel.'

With that, the angel vanished.

In stunned exaltation, Muhammad went and told Khadija what had happened. She embraced him and unequivocally expressed her faith in his vision and his mission, saying, 'Rejoice, dear husband. He who holds in His hands the life of Khadija is my witness that thou wilt be the messenger of His people.'

But Muhammad could not accept his own vision. How could he, an ordinary man so far from perfection, be such a messenger? He feared that he might be deluded or perhaps insane. Days passed. He waited for another sign, for further confirmation so that he might believe in himself and know how to proceed. But no sign came.

At last, he returned to the cave on Mount Hira, seeking the angel Gabriel. He waited and prayed, but to no avail. In despair, haunted by terrible doubts and assailed by fears of madness, Muhammad climbed onto a precipice and prepared to leap to his death. At that very moment, the angel appeared before him again and, raising his hands, repeated, 'I am Gabriel, and thou art Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.' Muhammad froze on the edge of the chasm in a spellbound trance. Hours passed. That night one of Khadija's servants came and found Muhammad still perched on a crag, lost in ecstasy, and led him home.

After that event, Muhammad began to quietly spread the revelation of his new faith among only a few close friends and family members. But in this tightly knit culture, word spread quickly. Before long, his persecution began--gossip, brutal beatings, plots against him, and attempts against his life. Over time, his honesty and virtue, the words of scripture revealed through him, and the mysterious workings of fate brought about the conversions of several of Mecca's greatest warriors. All this greatly strengthened the fledgling faith of Islam and drove fear into the hearts of its enemies.

People demanded that he perform miracles as proof of his divine mission. Muhammad answered that he had not come to perform miracles; he had come to preach the word of Allah. Challenged to move a mountain, he gazed toward it but it did not budge, so he spoke the now-famous words demonstrating his wisdom, humor, and humility: 'If the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad will go to the mountain.'

From beginning to end, Muhammad acknowledged himself as an ordinary man, full of faults and limitations--a man chosen by God, for reasons he did not understand, to deliver a new revelation of Islam, which means 'submission to God.' Islam required faith in God, charity, purity, and a life free of idols, lived with the courage of a warrior in battle, with prayer as a cleansing immersion in His spirit.

The citizens of Mecca were roused to fury by Muhammad's attack on their cherished idols--and by his declaration that there was but one God, named Allah, and that he, Muhammad, was His prophet. Forced to flee across the desert to the city of Medina, he began his mission anew, once again a lonely prophet with a handful of followers in a city of unbelievers.

Over time, the angel Gabriel revealed scripture to Muhammad, which he recited aloud and which Khadija and others wrote down. This scripture became known as the Holy Koran (Quran). The Koran was Muhammad's defining miracle--the writing of this masterpiece of poetic religious scripture by a simple, semiliterate man might in itself have earned him fame as a prophet. But this feat was only one chapter in the life of Muhammad.

Persecuted as a heretic for nearly two decades by the people of Mecca {How was Khadija still alive if he spent almost two decades there? The math doesn't work, but perhaps the semiliterate don't worry.}, including many of his own relatives and former friends, the once young Bedouin became in old age a fearless military general. More than once, Mecca's army laid siege, seeking to destroy Medina, where Muhammad and his followers lived--their war would not end until Muhammad or Mecca fell. In the final battle, while outnumbered three to one, but filled with the power of Allah, Muhammad and his followers descended like a storm upon the Meccan army and destroyed it. This battle turned the tide. (1)

The people who ridicule the legends of Indians and natives aren't funny and it isn't right for me to do it either. Still it seems a poor role model to win followers by the sword of Allah or Yahweh (Yahu) or Shiva. We are all paying the price these story-tellers have wrought since the day of Caliph Omar and Constantine who took the fledgling new beliefs and built empires under their spell of ignorance. Omar said there was no need to read anything other than the Koran as he commanded one of the raids to destroy the great library at Alexandria that housed all knowledge; we need to really know about our roots. Islam has much good and is less intolerant than other Ur Story based religions. The Caliphate still has its stranglehold on the souls of people. It does not want people to have knowledge so it encourages reading old books with limited meaning, as I see it.

Lend Lease Act Was Real Free Trade, Not Chopped Liver, as in Globalist Flat World

The Globalist Free Traders have found an evangelist in Thomas Friedman of the New York Times. In his book The World is Flat, Friedman calls periods in history that paved the way for Globalization and Free Trade flatteners but he skips over some of the most major ones. The Lend Lease Act in the World War 2 era is one of them. It changed the course of history and it demonstrated that you can't do business with people who do not have money. You either have to find a way to get money to them or you have to give them things to restore their economic values in a balanced geopolitical setting. You can not move production from place to place seeking the cheapest labor markets of the world because there is an endless pool of workers who will do most anything to survive and they will never have enough money to buy anything the economic host nation may still have left to sell.

In the end, you have a continuous diminishing process where a working poor class needs cheaper and cheaper prices while the impoverished destitute classes do not make enough money to grow their own economy proving you can not do business with people who do not have money. You can only use them for selfish purposes. This then acts as a boomerang coming back to knock you out too. It is like a dog chasing its own tail. Consumers in the USA shop their way out of their jobs. The money spent at the retail levels quickly fans out to the places where the products are made. The money does not stay in the USA to regrow its own economy.

Who won World War 2? The American workers did. Who lost World War 2 fifty years later? The American workers have. The U.S. has gone through the most massive dislocation of workers in U.S. history with millions losing their jobs. More than 700,000 workers related to the steel industry, over 400,000 auto workers and over a million workers in the computer industry lost their jobs. One third of those over 55 who lost their jobs never found another. Now, workers as taxpayers pay to bring in foreign auto assemblers. The State of Indiana after all things are considered, is paying Honda about 150 million dollars to bring an assembly plant into their state. This will provide 4000 new assembly jobs but recently, close to 20,000 auto parts factory workers have lost their jobs in the state. Taxpayers in other states have paid out even more to get KIA, BMW and other foreign auto assemblers to come to their states. Misssissippi is paying KIA 400 million dollars to assemble KIA automobiles in their state. These autos are describes as being built in the USA and not Made in the USA since the parts come from the wage slave workers of the world. The number of assembly workers in all these foreign plants is only a fraction of the workers of the existing workers in U.S. auto manufacturing plants. They also work for about one half of what the auto workers made in the past.

Who won World War two in the final analysis?

Let us go back in time to 1940. The USA was still coming out of the Great Depression. Tariffs were blamed as the major cause of the depression. However the main cause of the Depression was the stock market crash and the economy took this big hit during a time when tariffs were not even applicable. Free Traders today like to blame the Smooth-Hawley Tariffs as the cause of the Depression, but this bill was passed after the Stock Market crash in 1930 and never really did take hold before Roosevelt took over. Soon afterwards Roosevelt had the authority to lower and raise Tariffs at will in 1934

The next phase ignited the most powerful industrial might in history. Tariffs had no part in the process. Roosevelt knew our nation could not mobilize by semi-independent ways - mobilization had to come as a whole based on many vital needs whether for the military or for civilian uses. President Roosevelt had to sell the war to the American people in a sequence of actions. He started out by doing it with executive orders and schemes. Roosevelt said- what I am trying to do is eliminate the dollar sign - we need to get rid of the silly foolish dollar sign. This was good news to England and Russia who did not have much money left to fight a war.

Thus began the first wave of Free Trade but it was built on giving away products made in the USA. Many Americans accepted the premise thinking they could stay out of the war while building up our economy at the same time.

Lack of money was the biggest problem in the world. The world was coming out of a Great Depression. After World War 1, the allies wanted Germany to be just one big farm without any production capabilities. Hitler came and filled the void by creating a strong military to invade other countries killing people who were in the way. In the process, Hitler demonstrated how a war machine can create industrial might out of nothing. China and Russia with a elite groups controlling the masses did not have this same capacities but still killed millions for their causes. They killed more than Germany ever did, but the USA chose Germany to be their first enemy. At the same time Japan was claiming a right to the mainland for the sake of their own economic survival. The U.S. approved their claim at the beginning of the century but reversed their agreements with Japan in the 1930s. Japan felt the U.S. betrayed them. This set the stage for Pearl Harbor. After all is said and done, it was really not a surprise attack.

Roosevelt did not want money to get in the way. He took many by surprise when he said, what I am trying to do is to eliminate the dollar sign- we need to get rid of the silly foolish old dollar sign. This also meshed with the new economic theories stating you do not owe anybody and money if you owe yourself. On September 2, 1940, Roosevelt gave Britain 50 Navy Destroyers under his own executive order. This violated international laws and understanding about neutrality. In essence, the U.S.A unofficially declared war on Germany on September 2, 1940.

Around the same time, Roosevelt used an old 1917 law to trade in planes to private manufacturers for newer models with the understanding the private firms would then send the old model planes to Britain at no costs. Then Roosevelt took a further step. After getting re- elected, he had Congress approved the Lend-Lease Act which bypassed any money problems the British and Communist Russia may have had. Right after getting the act passed, Roosevelt made up a list of products we could lend the allies. However, out of the billions of dollars of products sent to the allies, the U.S. was later repaid for just a fraction of the total amounts including the ten per cent of the total U.S. agricultural production that went to Britain and Russia. The U.S.A. also produced and supplied 50% of all the munitions used in World War 2.

Of course, this brought prosperity to the USA. After the war, based on the awesome industrial power, the USA launched the Marshall Plan. This helped restore the local value added economies in Europe and Asia. If we gave Japan this vast economic boost before the war, there would have been really no reason for the war with Japan. Free Traders ignore most of this and chant about non-existent Tariffs that broke our economy during the pre-war era when the undeclared war started years before with Roosevelt's version of Free Trade. They chant how competition rules the game but as we know this was not the case during the World War 2 era. Then and now it is very questionable if the U.S.A ever had to compete in a global arena. Who, what, when and where concluded we had to compete in a global arena.

Lend-Lease did show that the only thing that works are local value added economies that grow values up several levels from raw product to the retail or end user stage. It also demonstrates , you can not fight any war of any long duration without a strong industrial sector. Today, we have chopped up our local value added economies and scattered the pieces all over the world. In the World War 2 era, we gave away the golden eggs laid by our golden goose industrial might. Now we have chopped up the goose and sent the pieces across the globe. Why have research and development if the manufacturing phase goes somewhere else? Now we have a small high tech army being defeated in a small country with human bombs. Rumsfeld war theories are like a young boy who grew too fast and needs to to get out of any fight fast before his weak stature is exposed. Finally, President Franklin Roosevelt said, economic diseases are highly communicable. I wonder what he would say today. Free Trade is like sex, you sleep with many partners and subsequently everyone they have slept with. It is an economic epidemic.

Reinvention - Six Random Thoughs On By An Observer Of Business

Re-invention; Six Random thoughts If it aint broke dont fix it term often heard at Hurttes Texaco 1964 I had just started working as a car wash boy (a strapping ten years old) when I first heard mechanic Von use the term. I bet youve heard it used too. To some extent, theres a bit of human nature stashed deep in the phrase, too. Unfortunately, in todays business things are breaking daily. Being prepared with better decisions equates to anticipating issues and planning alternatives before things break. Reinvention takes place when we fix the broke without waiting for the explosion.

The following are some random thoughts on breakage.

What might break? One --Computer Technology continues as a major driver of change. As I sit in my comfortable chair laptop on my knee, I think about the changes in the technology of creating this article. In 1984 my process for creating this article would have included dictating a draft to my secretary, Sherry. She would have manually typed the manuscript at least three times. Finally, I would have dropped the finished copy into the mail at the downtown Post Office. In just a little over twenty years we went from fax, computer, home computer, and floppy drives, to email and laptops with wireless.

  • How can technology change your business?
  • What happens if you dont use it?
  • How long will it take you to learn it?
Two Demographic shifts can cause things to break. You may be doing things fine but your customers may be going out of business. Ultimately somebody is going to suffer. Here are a couple of short examples in the demographic business. Sometime in the 1970s the North American Machine Tool market took an abrupt change. If you were doing a business with one of these companies you might have had some breakage. Think about the shifts in manufacturing demographics as scores of businesses moved off shore.

  • What kind of long range demographic changes are you anticipating?
  • What happens if you are not prepared for these shifts?
  • How long will it take you to adjust if you wait for things to break?
Three Fashion doesnt necessarily mean latest in clothing trends. I like to think of these as the cultural trends that affect everything from our shoes to our house and car. Here are a couple of fashions you may have noticed. Granite counter tops in kitchens come to mind. A realtor in Bettendorf, Iowa told me, A granite top in your (gourmet) kitchen will sell you house every time. The only place I remember with granite tops when I was a kid was the High School cafeteria. Yet, my guess is you can think of a half dozen people with newly installed granite top counters.

  • Are there fashion trends that can cause things to break in your business?
  • How can you monitor and make best use of the changes in your own area of expertise?
  • What new positioning would put you at the front of these fashion trends?
Four Competition is a good thing, but even slight changes in competitive landscape can cause things to break. In the industrial contactor and small business world, Home Depot and the like have vastly changed the lay of the land. Staples and Office Depot have changed the dynamics of office supply. But these are just a few of the shifts.

  • What happens if even a small competitive force comes your way?
  • Are there customers who might be vulnerable to a competitor?
Five Commoditization will rock your world. The half life of a lot of businesses is getting shorter. Back in 1991 there were dozens of independent movie rental stores. Movies started off renting for 4-5 dollars per day. By the end of the boom times, they were renting for a buck a week. Now www.netflick.com is putting a commodity squeeze on the few remaining brick and motor businesses. Movies are renting for next to nothing. They had things break in that industry. And, the list could go on and on. Computer wholesalers felt their product become commodity. And to my recollection only a couple actually survived that commodity drop.

  • Do you know where your products lie in the commodity curve?
  • Commodity products result in lower gross margin, what effect will an overall lowering of gross margin percentage have on your products?
Six Supply Chain plans can break. In my career, I saw UPS and FedEx change the lay of the land. In 1978, my employer (a Milwaukee based Electrical Product Manufacturer) had forty warehouses across North America. To put this into a local perspective, the only way a Des Moines customer could get anything next day was counter to counter airfreight (very expensive) or via bus from the Davenport warehouse. This sounds funny by todays standards but in the late seventies, this was the state of the supply chain.

  • How will future supply chain issues affect your business?
  • How are your customers and suppliers tied into your own business needs?
A parting thought In 1964 (even 1974, 1984, or 1994) things were different. Business moved at a slower pace. Things could break and we had plenty of time to fix them. Today is different; we need to look for breakdowns in the making. Re-invention, reengineering and constant improvement have become the order of the day. Time spent projecting into the future is time well spent.

Testing New Carp Baits - How To Guarantee Your New Boilie Bait Mix Is 'Super Effective'

Many anglers would love to make their own carp and catfish baits but have been confused by the myriad of information which often serves to complicate rather than simplify this exciting process.

Many people have heard of dough baits, paste and boilie base mixes. These are a combination of dry powdered ingredients which can be mixed with water, eggs or other liquids, to create a mouldable dough to create baits in paste form, or boilied to form more long--lasting skinned boiled baits.

Base mix design is fun because they can incorporate such a wide variety of ingredients, for different effects, and to target different species in different ways.

But do you start by just choosing ingredients at random and hoping they mix together, or is there an easier method of controlling your exploratory mixing of ingredients?

Well, one idea is to mix together just enough powdered ingredients that if you mix them with one egg or a quarter of a cup of water, then they would mix together and bind together into a dough. Now at this test stage if you have your various ingredients in the right amounts (ratio), they will bind correctly to form a smooth mouldable dough.

Once you have tried small amounts of different ratios of your ingredients and noted the amounts in each mix tested, you will now have your own personal guide to which combinations form a practical, mouldable or rollable dough or paste; just right for making balls of bait for hook baits, or to boil in water to make boilies.

It does take a small amount of trial and error to reach this stage, but by using only small amounts of ingredients at a time you will only waste a fraction, compared to incorrectly mixing much larger amounts of perhaps expensive ingredients, and then discovering they will not bind together, or roll together, or they might even repel the fish!

Of cause, the design of the bait mix you use for your fish is paramount to successful big fish captures, and you need to test your new mix before making loads of perhaps ineffective bait! It is possible to make bait that seems nutritional and attractive, but actually, for some unforeseen reason, it does not catch fish!

So, it is advisable to test your new bait mixes on fish before possibly wasting time fishing with it. In the early days of making bait, I recall fishing for carp one night just casting out when I arrived and leaving the baits until morning, but without any fish caught. I discovered the bait only lasted half an hour before dissolving! A quick test before fishing would have saved a wasted night when the carp were truly feeding well, whilst I slept well!

Try leaving your new baits / boilies in a cup of water of different temperatures, and time how long they last before they break down, or how long it takes to flavor the water with attractors. This is really useful to your confidence to know this for a fact and demonstrates to you how your bait performs under water; something most anglers never experience for themselves!

Perhaps feed some of your new bait to fish in a garden pond, or seen feeding on the surface of your lake. You could even make your baits as instant floaters perhaps by micro waving them for very short periods until they star to be able to float in a test cup of water. (Try not to burn them!)

Watching the reactions of surface feeding fish feeding on your new baits is an instant indication of the power of attraction your baits may have or not, especially if you feed them alongside a bait you already know is exceptionally good like a top proven shop bought bait. When fish attention to your new bait is equal or even better than that given to the other control bait, then youre on a winner!

Or leave them in shallow marginal areas at the edges of your lake or river, and aim to actually observe the feeding reactions of fish to your bait over a morning or evening feeding spell to see how confidently the fish enter the baited area and feed on the new baits. You might be in for a real surprise!

For example, I made a new carp bait once, with a new sweet appetite stimulator powder incorporated into the baits original dry mix. I just tested the paste dough version instead of boilies. I wished to see if I had over loaded the bait with this new ingredient, and made it repellant to carp! I had aimed to improve the new bait, by enhancing it with a new instant feeding trigger carp response.

Having dropped pieces of the new bait into a marginal lake feeding area I waited for carp to feed, and was elated at the response, as instead of fleeing the area, they kept returning with more of their carp friends to enjoy this new delicious feast; until it was all gone. My only regret was I wasnt fishing for them at the time; it would have been great fun!

I have made many dry ingredient base mixes that would not roll evenly to form a paste, many using fish meals with a rough or grainy texture, many of which turned out to be fairly insoluble and requiring substantial water or eggs to make them bind together to other ingredients.

The same can be said of bird food ingredients. But these mistakes are never wasted and can indeed be the perfect bait for a different situation or fishing circumstance. Many a mix that would not roll has become used as a fantastically effective free bait or form the very attractive and nutritional ground bait.

I remember trying to make bait using flaked rice and spirulina based cold water fish food. I added to it some semolina (wheat based flour) as a binder and lots of molasses and egg biscuit bird food. But I had not added enough semolina; once I had added some eggs to help binding, the mix would bind together, but not roll to form bait balls.

Instead of adding more poor nutritional value semolina, I decided to use this new sugar bait as I called it, as a new experimental ground bait. (It was extremely tacky and stuck to my hands like glue.) So I went fishing using my current base mix boilies for hook baits, and used some of the new failed paste mix as small finger molded baits, to use as carp attracting close proximity attractor baits. These were baiting baiting needle fed onto dissolving polyvinyl alcohol strings tied to the hooks.

Having cast out two hook baits in a line at right angles from the bank, and catapulted out a line of new sticky sugar paste baits directly over the top of them things started to happen.

What a surprise! Normally it could take an hour to 6 hours or more to get the carp to really get feeding on the bait, as demonstrated by their head and shouldering surface movements, diving on the baits and bubbling activity. Almost immediately, four carp rolled simultaneously, along the baited line. It took just five minutes for the first carp run to occur.

Then runs just kept coming for the next hour and a half. (I lost count how many!) This was at a time when it could take 24 hours to produce that number of takes; so this was truly exceptional. This was an important lesson to me in the value of using paste or dough baits instead of boilie baits whose results really were much less.

This was such another striking example of how a new bait can trigger an instant carp feeding response, and it stuck in the memory. A very similar bait hooked the largest fish in this particular lake (Shotgate, Essex.) This came merely two minutes after casting out the bait out! On a different lake, (South Weald Essex,) a similar paste bird food bait with high levels of sugars, molasses and the famous Rod Hutchinson Chocolate Malt flavour, produced even more stunning responses from the big fish there.

There were many, many such examples of experimental baits producing fantastic results, some being yeast and spices based, some being fish meal based, and others being milk protein and body building powders based. Again some of these baits were so packed with attractive energy boosting sugars and were so soluble they proved exceptional alternative instant baits; many producing the lakes biggest fish almost after the first cast!

Testing new baits and ingredients is so exiting at times; I made a trip to Dream Lakes in France, one year. I had been testing a new ground bait made from a boilie base mix packed with taurine rich squid extract. This bait was not cheap, but all my experience and bait knowledge told me it was a fantastic edge to take to a fishery with such consistently high angling pressure.

Fishing the often harder to fish Dream Lake 1 each morning I fed just one grapefruit sized ball of this ground bait into the edge of the lake right next to the bank at a difficult to cast to place. This would be just before breakfast time, at which point I would make my way up to the anglers lodge for a half hour social.

Upon returning to the baited spot the water would literally be black! Such was the feeding response to this bait; my confidence in catching was so high I couldnt wait to cast a rod out, and it sometimes only took a few seconds to initiate a carp take!

I realise now, that the majority of my most successful bait mixes and ground bait mixes have come about more by accident and doing things wrong as much as by design as most great inventions are!

You may be wondering if you could be missing out on exceptionally exciting catches by your ritualistically and habitually buying your most important fishing competitive edge at the shop, rather than solving your special fishing needs and requirements yourself. Why not break the lazy habits the majority of fishermen seem to have these days; try going fishing with your own homemade baits, and make sure you take loads of spare film for the camera!

I wish everyone who is brave and adventurous enough to make their own homemade carp and catfish baits, the very rich rewards they will surely reap!
